Diekirch situated on the borders of the river “Sûre” and surrounded by pittoresque heights such as “Haardt”, “Goldknapp”, “Seitert” and “Herrenberg” is one of this small towns that satisfies the tourist which has an eye for the “couleur locale”! It is the old quarter, now changed in a pedestrian zone with shops, cafes, old streets and small passages recently restored and last but not least a big open terras square in the midst of the center where in the summer public concerts, folklore and games follow each other, that attracts the tourist amazment and make them call for a good and genuine “Diekirch Beer”!
If you are an adept of history it is in the old quarter that you will discover within the setting of old time houses, the jewel of the town, the old St. Laurence Church. Classified as an historical monument, the old St. Laurence Church was erected on the remains of an important roman villa. Roman mosaiques found in the same location will be exposed in the Historical Museum Diekirch (planned opening: 2010). Quite an other museum which is worthwile of a detour is the National Museum of Military History, that with support of supersized dioramas brings back to memory the most significant events of the Battle of the Bulge 1944-1945. The National Museum for Historical Vehicles is unique in Luxembourg for its fabulous exhibits as well as for the early 20th century style “Art Nouveau” of the building itself. The beer museum is also enclosed here. After all Diekirch must live up to its reputation as a beer town! At this number of museums belongs lately a Bee Museum. The story of this hard-working insect will inspire great and small.
When you are a lover of nature, Diekirch is offering you a great variety of possibilities to relax, fishing, quite a ressort of cycling pists and marked footing paths, well provided with resting places.
Last but not least Diekirch does not ignore youngsters, various sites are reserved for modern games, open air events in respect of handycraft and similar activities are organized in the pedestrian zone and at the camping site. Running around on a bicycle or by foot will make them discover a beautiful nature.
